Japan Studies Program

The courses are taught in English and focus on Japanese culture, history, politics, society, and international relations.
Students explore Japan from both historical and contemporary perspectives, gaining insight into its cultural traditions, social issues, and global role.

  • Alexandra Must??ea, Ph.D

  • Alexandra Must??ea is an associate professor specializing in Japan Studies, with a particular focus on Japanese intellectual history and the history of ideas.
    Her research explores how philosophical traditions have shaped Japanese society from the early modern period to the present.

    Courses Taught: The History of Premodern Japan, Japanese Language and Culture, Japanese Literature, Women's Studies in Japan, etc.

  • Jeffrey James Hall, Ph.D.

  • Jeffrey James Hall’s research and writing focus on political and social issues in Japan.
    His work also examines historical memory, territorial disputes, and nationalism in Japan, and includes work that focuses on the role of popular culture and social media.

    Courses Taught: The History of Modern Japan, Japanese Politics, International Relations: Japan in a Global Context, etc.

  • Japanese Traditional Activities

    This traditional Japanese-style room offers a view of a Japanese garden through its windows. The space is used to host public classes in traditional arts such as the Shamisen and Koto music as well as Japanese tea ceremonies, welcoming international students and visitors, providing opportunities to experience the spirit of Japanese culture.

    Dance Cover Club

Through sports and cultural clubs, students build friendships across majors, ages, and nationalities, broaden their perspectives, and grow together through shared challenges, successes, and experiences. KUIS has various clubs where students can learn about Japan, such as Japanese drums, Japanese calligraphy and Japanese archery.

Local School Visit

Exchange students have opportunities to visit local elementary and high schools. Through school tours, presentations, and group activities with local students, exchange students can gain a deeper understanding of Japanese society.

Local government-sponsored activities for international students (Undergraduate Students only)

International students have opportunities to participate in international activities organized by local governments. These iniciatives encourage interaction with local residents and provide opportunities to share cultures and perspectives. Participants may take part in community events, cultural activities, and discussions with local communities.
