Student Exchange Programs

KUIS accepts exchange students from its international partner universities for one or two semesters and offers Japanese language education as well as academic courses delivered in both Japanese and English.

Exchange Program Outline

Exchange students choose from Program 1: Japanese Language and Culture Program (commonly referred to as the Bekka Program) or Program 2: English-taught Undergraduate Courses Program.

  • Program1

Japanese Language and Culture Program (Bekka Program)

This program is designed for students who wish to study the Japanese language and culture in depth. It is open to students of all Japanese proficiency levels. Students who meet the language requirements may also take regular university courses offered by the Faculty of Foreign Languages or the Faculty of Global Liberal Arts alongside Japanese students.

  • Program2

    English-taught Undergraduate Courses Program

This program focuses on courses taught in English and offered by the Faculty of Foreign Languages or the Faculty of Global Liberal Arts. It is particularly well suited for students who wish to deepen their understanding of Japan, as it offers a wide range of courses in Japan studies.

Clubs and Extracurricular Activities

Clubs and extracurricular activities provide opportunities to build lifelong friendships across academic majors, ages, and nationalities. Through these activities, students broaden their perspectives and grow together through shared challenges, successes, and experiences.

  • Japanese Language Partner
    Kaede Mate

The Kaede Mate program pairs international students with KUIS students throughout the semester. Paired international students and KUIS students meet once a week for one hour to chat in Japanese. Students in their first semester of exchange are required to participate in this program.

  • Student Organization for Creating an International Atmosphere
    KUIS Global Ambassadors (KGA)

KUIS Global Ambassadors is a student organization for international exchange established in 2020. KGA initiates, plans, and manages international exchange activities such as gatherings, on-campus events, and information sharing on a voluntary and proactive basis. Participation in events organized by KGA is encouraged for international students during their studies at KUIS.

  • Supportive Volunteer Group
    Welcome Team

The Welcome Team, a group of KUIS student volunteers, supports exchange students in settling into life in Japan. Support includes guidance to student housing, assistance during orientation, and directions for commuting to campus. Members of the Welcome Team can also provide advice regarding life in Japan, student life, and other concerns.

  • Clubs

KUIS offers a variety of clubs where students can make new friends and experience Japanese culture and team spirit. Through sports and cultural clubs, students build friendships across majors, ages, and nationalities, broaden their perspectives, and grow together through shared challenges, successes, and experiences.

  • Day Trip

Day trips are organized throughout the semester, allowing students to explore different regions of Japan. Each trip offers a balanced experience of sightseeing, cultural discovery, and community interaction.

  • Language Practice Partners (LPPs)

Language Practice Partners (LPPs) is a service that offers language practice and cultural exchange through a 30-minute appointment. During each session, one partner helps the other practice a language for 15 minutes, followed by 15 minutes of practice in the other language.

  • Chat Time

The Multilingual Communication Center (MULC) has dedicated areas for each of KUIS’s major languages other than English: Chinese, Korean, Indonesian, Vietnamese, Thai, Spanish, and Brazilian Portuguese. In each area, Chat Time sessions are held where students can practice the language with faculty members and international students who speak that language. Selected exchange students may receive a scholarship in return for serving Chat Time duty.
