Christmas Markets

December is here! It’s the month of illuminations, hot chocolate, and gifts, so this month’s topic is an event that combines these three things: Christmas Markets!
12月がやってきました！イルミネーションとココア、プレゼントの季節なので、これらの3つを組み合わせる行事を紹介します。それが「クリスマスマーケット」！

Before Christmas Markets, there were Winter Markets. The oldest Winter Market began in Vienna, Austria in 1298. The Winter Market was held so that villagers could buy supplies for the cold and dark season. After that, Christmas-themed markets started in other German-speaking areas. Vendors sold nuts, gingerbread, and wooden toys to celebrate the holiday.
クリスマスマーケットができる以前には、ウインターマーケットがありました。ウインターマーケットは1298年に初めてオーストリアのウィーンで開かれました。ウィーンの村民がこれから来る寒くて暗い冬のために、食べ物や日用品を準備するために行われました。その後、別のドイツ語圏の地域でクリスマスをテーマにしたマーケットが開催されました。そこではナッツやジンジャーブレッド、木製のおもちゃが売られていました。

Today, the biggest Christmas markets are in Germany, Austria, and France. However, you can also visit major Christmas Markets in the UK, the USA, Canada, Spain, and here in Japan! Visitors can enjoy food, shopping, and experiencing how different cultures celebrate the winter holidays.
今日では、ドイツやオーストリア、フランスで大規模なクリスマスマーケットがありますが、イギリスやアメリカ、カナダ、スペイン、さらには日本でも盛大なマーケットが開催されています。行ってみると食事や買い物を楽しめると同時に、ほかの文化ではどのように祝日を祝っているのかを体験することができます。
