Mexico's Pyramids

Did you know that most of the world’s pyramids are located in the Americas?

ご存知ですか？世界のピラミッドの大部分はアメリカ大陸にあります！

Mexico alone has about 30 ancient pyramids. These pyramids were built by native peoples, such as the Maya and the Aztecs. Many pyramids are built to face the sunrise or sunset on important dates. Usually, there is a temple on top of the pyramid.

メキシコにはピラミッドが約３０あります。これらは、マヤやアステカなどの原住民によって建てられました。多くのピラミッドは、大切な日にちょうど日の出または日の入りに面するように建てられています。また、ピラミッドの頂上にはお寺があることが一般的です。

The pyramid in this picture is called The Temple of Kukulkán. It is about 1000 years old, and is located in Chichén Itzá, Mexico. It has exactly 365 steps: 91 steps on each side, plus one step at the entrance. This pyramid was built for the ancient feathered snake god, called “Kukulkán.”

この写真のピラミッドは「ククルカンの寺」といいます。メキシコのチチェン?イッツァ市にあり、完成してから約1000年になります。９１段の階段が4つと、入り口に最後の一段があり、全部で365段となります。このピラミッドは「ククルカン」という羽毛の蛇神のために建てられました。

Today, only a few pyramids allow visitors to climb to the top. However, visitors can still enjoy taking pictures, walking around the ruins, and learning about the peoples of ancient Mexico.

現代では、頂点まで登ることのできるピラミッドは残りわずかです。しかし、写真を撮影したり、遺跡の周りをまわったりして、古代メキシコの人々を想像することができます。
